GL Courses
As a part of our curriculum, we have to take four Global Learning designated courses. Through these courses, I was able to explore the world of communications with a lens on the global stage.
MMC3303: Global Media & Society
In Global Media & Society, we learned about the various forms of transactions when it comes to communication and the formats that help us do so. For our final project, everyone was assigned a country. I explored Spain's history and characteristics in advertising.
IDS3309: How We Know What We Know
I took this class during Fall of 2020 when various historical events affecting the world were taking place: the pandemic, racial unrest, and the election in our homeland. While I considered myself someone who felt they could get through the news cycle and see what was biased and what was not, I still had much to learn. During this class, I realized not to discount social media completely as a news source while also keeping my news sources diverse.
COM3461: Intercultural/Interracial Communication
During this course, we examined how cultures manifest themselves in our world. We learned about how the US differs between Latin American, Asian, African, and European countries and how we can go about interacting with those who have experiences life differently from ours. We worked in teams to problem solve issues that may come up when interacting with others in a country outside of ours. In addition, we examined media and looked at it through various lenses such as gender.
VIC3400: Visual Design for Global Media
This class helped me explore the intricacy of design and why each step in the creative process matters. We also learned the importance of being thorough with our communication through copywriting, which can be troublesome since words carry different meanings in different cultures.
